Bosnian Speciality

Written by on Aug 18, 2012 in Blog | 1 comment, your thoughts are welcome

I love food   Especially food that is well made and let me tell you, here in Lumbarda, they do food well! The following recipe, however, is not Croatian, but Bosnian. It is called Pita… now some of you, I ‘m sure, are picturing pita bread… this is nothing like pita bread. This Bosnian dish, which I have to say is one of my favourites, is a pin wheel pastry, filled with meat (burek), cheese(sir), or spinach(zelena).  I was pleasantly surprised when Edina made a mushroom(gljiva) version…so I thought I would share the recipe with...

Holy Hot Batman!

Written by on Aug 10, 2012 in Blog | 4 comments, your thoughts are welcome

Ok so it has been really hot here in Lumbarda, Korcula, Croatia, 35 to 40 degrees.  I arrived July 26th and it has been sunny and hot ever since, which after 3 months of rain in England, I should really be happy about but here is the thing…. My apartment does not have air-conditioning… nor does my car…. and well I am not going to an office so no AC there either. It has never occurred to me that with all the air conditioning in my life, that my body has always had the opportunity to cool down.  Now with no AC, I find this heat...

Noodle, the superstar – Travelling with a cat Part II

Written by on Jul 28, 2012 in Blog | 2 comments, your thoughts are welcome

My cat is a superstar! If you recall I took my cat, Noodle, to England.  I had no idea how she travelled as she was in the underbelly of the plane and I only saw her at the end, wide eyed and terrified.  So on Wednesday, when I had to travel from England to Croatia, I was not sure what I was in store for, as she would be travelling with me in the cabin.  As you can probably gather from the title, Noodle was a rockstar. My friend Mike was visiting from Calgary and we had rented a car for our travels from the week before.  With all the...

I travelled to Dublin and London over the last week and thought I would jot down some random thoughts and experiences I had while there.  Hope you get a giggle from some of  them and please add your own comments below. 1. Wear comfortable shoes 2. If you nap on the subway, be sure you are with someone that can wake you up. 3. Smile, people will always become more friendly. 4. When in England, carry an umbrella, it will always rain. 5. Dinner and a theatre show for £45 will always have you sitting behind a post. 6. Do not question a man...

Language blunder!

Written by on Jul 12, 2012 in Blog | 3 comments, your thoughts are welcome

How many of you have learned a language? I was telling a story the other day, and was laughing about a mix up with words.  I decided I would share this story with you today. I have learned 3 languages in my lifetime, although none fluently. I took French in highschool, because my mother made me. I went on to study Spanish at university, and as I have mentioned before, spent a year living in Spain. Now I am studying Croatian, and I curse my father daily for not speaking it to me as a child. I need to give a quick intro to Croatian for this...

Urbanizations? Should have researched…

Written by on Jul 6, 2012 in Blog | 0 comments, your thoughts are welcome

I went to Spain last week. I went to an area known as Costa Blanca. As you can rightly assume, we were on the coast. I went to an Urbanization called Villamartin…. do you know what an urbanization is? Well I didn’t. And I am not really sure how I would explain it, other then it is not very Spanish. We were picked up at the airport in Murcia and driven to our accommodations. They were great! A lovely 2 bedroom townhouse, with a front, back and roof terrace. Pretty ceramic tiles surrounded the numbers on the house, the floors were tiled,...

Divorce Travel?

Written by on Jun 29, 2012 in Blog | 1 comment, your thoughts are welcome

When you think of painting tours, does your mind think of female or male participants? As a tour operator, the majority of my clients are female… infact the only men that have attended were there with a partner, or have been an instructor. I was doing research the other day and found out that an untapped travel writing niche was “Divorce Travel”.  Now I am not going to dedicate my blog to divorce travel but it did get me thinking about how many women are on my tours and what a great opportunity for all you single/divorced men out...

Sun deprived…

Written by on Jun 22, 2012 in Blog | 3 comments, your thoughts are welcome

I have lived in Ottawa for the last 14 years and according to ottawa.weatherstats.ca, we get 303.38 days of sun a year… It may be -30 but it will be sunny! I presently am in Navenby, England and since I arrived May 1st we have only had about 14 days of sun and that was, mostly, all at once…. therefore making the other 6 weeks bleak, dreary and wet. I still have a month to go…. My roommate Roberta said to me the other day, “you are noticeably different when the sun is shining”.  I know this to be true.  It is not that I...
