Cynthia Clarke has always loved art. In elementary school, she maintains she had the best fine art teachers who guided and encouraged her. From that time on, she developed a lifelong interest in drawing and painting at every opportunity. As an elementary school teacher, she was able to teach art and attend art workshops throughout her career. Backdrops for the annual Christmas Concerts at the school and creating and painting a School mural for a 50th anniversary celebration were some of the ‘asides’ from teaching art classes. Her love for painting in watercolor began when she took a break from teaching for a year and started taking art classes with several local professionals artists. From the techniques and guidance given by these artists Cynthia has since taught several workshops and has worked as an Artist-in-Residence.  After retiring from teaching, Cynthia continued to take watercolor classes and soon discovered the world of ‘plein air’ painting.

“As a practicing watercolor painter, I have had the opportunity to attend many watercolor workshops with renowned artists I admire and wish to learn more from their expertise. I have travelled to many locations in Canada and the United States several times a year and have been fortunate to visit various countries in Europe for the past 8 years with other like-minded artists. This has been an ongoing education through workshops with some excellent watercolor instructors. These include Karlyn Holman, Bonnie Brotzman, Kathie George, Rose Edin, Lian Quon Zhen, Gerald Brommer, and Thomas Schaller from the United States, as well as Barbara Barrett from Ireland, and Gordon McKenzie from Canada.

I enjoy painting ‘plein-air’, as well as in the studio, sharing ideas, inspiring each other, and learning how to improve and grow as an artist. I welcome the challenge of learning different techniques, dealing with a variety of subject, and trying new media. Experiencing the food, music, art, and history of the countries I visit has given me a much wider appreciation of the beauty and differences we all have to offer.

Taking photos of people, places, events, and scenery where I have travelled allows me to look back and recall those moments in time that I experienced and marveled at. As well, this treasure trove of photos is material I can easily draw from in creating a new painting…. or finishing one already started.  Being able to paint, create, emulate, share my skills and knowledge, travel, meet new friends and old, is, indeed, a blessing that I cherish. I have taught workshops locally and look forward to sharing sketching tips, drawing skills and watercolor techniques that have worked for me. By giving workshops or helping others in workshops, I hope to share my enthusiasm and passion for art.”
