Sun deprived…

Posted by on Jun 22, 2012 in Blog | 3 comments

I have lived in Ottawa for the last 14 years and according to ottawa.weatherstats.ca, sale we get 303.38 days of sun a year… It may be -30 but it will be sunny! I presently am in Navenby, England and since I arrived May 1st we have only had about 14 days of sun and that was, mostly, all at once…. therefore making the other 6 weeks bleak, dreary and wet. I still have a month to go…. My roommate Roberta said to me the other day, “you are noticeably different when the sun is shining”.  I know this to be true.  It is not that I am moody, or terse but rather quiet and...

Supporting Local Economies

Posted by on Jun 15, 2012 in Blog | 2 comments

I read an article the other day about supporting the local economy  while you are travelling, and it got me thinking, what do I do to support local economies? As you know I run art tours to Croatia.  When my clients arrive at the Dubrovnik airport, I transfer them to Cavtat which is 3km away.  Originally I had intended to have my students stay in Dubrovnik but with a group of 8-14 students, I would have had to stay in a hotel. Hotels are fine but not a true indication of the place you are staying in; living amoungst the locals always gives you a flavour of the local culture.  I was lucky to...

Taking the train

Posted by on Jun 1, 2012 in Blog | 5 comments

I don’t take the train often, because  in Canada it is still cheaper to drive your own car. I also think that it would be cheaper to drive here as well, but while I am in the UK I am carless and so I am taking the train. I flew to the Netherlands last Saturday, out of Stansted Airport. From Navenby you are looking at a 3 hour trip and so I decided to take the train. Now there was a bus but it took 6 hours and I would not have made the flight. Also I am not a big fan of the bus as the diesel smell makes me sick. I like the train… for many reasons really… I like the motion,...

Staying connected

Posted by on May 25, 2012 in Blog | 2 comments

I am lucky enough to have friends all over the world.  I have kept intouch with most people I have met over the last 30 years, infact I send out 150 Christmas cards every year. In today’s day and age it is easy to keep intouch, find old friends, and make plans to see each other. My 6 months has started in Navenby, England.  My friend Roberta is in the Canadian Military and she has been stationed in Digby for the next 3 years. Given that  my Painting & Photography tours are in Croatia, England is not that far away, so Roberta has been kind enough to let me use her as a base for the...
